Collection: Broken Stone Winery, PEC
Welcome to Broken Stone - one look at the soil will tell you the reason for the name. The soil is made up of the local broken limestone with some loam. Prince Edward County (PEC) is the most northern official Vintner's Quality Alliance (VQA) region in Ontario. It may be north but the region is growing and warming. Summers are hot but winters are cold. Vines are covered with soil (hilled) in November to protect them against the temperatures and then uncovered hopefully in March for growth for the harvest year.
Founded by financial researcher Tim Kuepfer and his marketing specialist wife Micheline, Broken Stone Winery is a family passion. As they say it's, "The people, the soils, and the vines [that] conspire to create the magic we call wine. The web of life is our terroir."
The Kuepfer's continually improve their vineyard biodiversity and soils. They live in harmony with the earth and hope to leave a legacy for future generations by farming sustainably. Hard work and care for the land creates a vineyard whose beauty is captured in the bottle.
You might find winemaker Tim in the cellar or the store, but he spends most of his time in the vineyard. He believes that great grapes make great wine, and works hard to ensure that each great vintage is a little better than the last.
Micheline is the glue that binds Broken Stone Winery and the family together. With her background in marketing and consumer demographics, she keeps the Broken Stone Winery brand on track, and nurtures the welcoming atmosphere in the tasting room.
